Oktoberfest!

It is a VERY sorry looking Matt Bruce who wakes up the next morning with the sun shining on his face. Thankfully my bed was right next to the window, otherwise I might have slept all day.

I am horrified and startled into action when I realise that it's 8:40am, and my plane leaves at 9:50am! I have passed out still wearing my lederhosen, forgotten to set my alarm, and to top it off I have lost my room key, wallet and my green Austrian vest!

Feeling like I have just shite my lederhosen, I run to the dunny to clean up and race to reception to figure out if any of my stuff has been handed in. Of course not, so I try to retrace my steps from last night from what I can remember, which isn't much.

I need to make a decision - do I cut my losses and just go, or do I search for things and miss my flight. I still have my passport so it's not the end of the world. I decide to have one final look, and remember that I have a habit of hanging things on the back of toilet doors and forgetting them (lost my keys at the surf club plenty of times doing that).

Well I too have been kissed on the filthy arse by an angel once again, as to my delight, there is my vest hanging on the back of the very last cubicle, wallet still in the front pocket, untouched. You bloody ripper!

I bolt to reception, hand in my key, and the lovely receptionist has a taxi waiting for me out the front within 2 minutes!

Judging from the photo here, the taxi driver must have thought I was gonna spew everywhere. Thankfully I don't and avoid the cleaning bill. Thankfully the airport at Salzburg is only 4km from the city centre and the taxi driver is well tipped for his speedy effort.

I get to the check-in counter and the lovely Austrian girl says that there is no rush, I have still 10 minutes to the close of check-in. Beauty.

When I arrive home in London, it's straight to bed. Funnily enough I wake up in the afternoon, and to my amazement I realise that somehow I have also managed to find the time to go duty free shopping for Kräuterlikör and chocolates. I have no recollection of how much I spent, but at least that takes care of some chrissy shopping!

I have never been so happy to see a Ryanair plane! I think I am probably still pissed when I take this photo on the tarmac. And for the record, this is the first time I have actually had to fly economy class since starting my travel! I am so tired I don't even care that I'm crammed in like a sardine.

And so ends my week in Germany and Austria. From Operation Zollamt SLSA, to Salzburg, Bavaria and Oktoberfest I estimate that I have spent something in order of $3000 AUD this week alone! (The Bank 'O Mat is now officially skint)

But it has been one of the best weeks of my life and I wouldn't have done it any other way. Except that I did manage to lose my club cap somewhere between Munich and Salzburg, but mum has already posted me a replacement!

Auf wiedersehen for now, until my next trip to Italy and Sweden in 4 weeks time.

Description: If there is a place on earth that is better than Cronulla, I am yet to find it. However, Oktoberfest is clearly the runner up. Welcome to the 'Easter Show on steroids'. I had great expectations for this event and all of them were exceeded. This place is boatie heaven, so it was appropriate that I would meet up with two of them, even if they are from Elouera 🙂 It's hard to stand out in the crowd in a beer tent full of 10,000 drunk revellers at Oktoberfest, yet somehow I managed to pull it off, and finished off my week in spectacular and unforgettable style that I'm sure will go down in hostel history.
